Makar Sankranti — Surya Arghya and Til-Gud Daan

On this day the Sun begins its northward-feeling journey into Capricorn and the days start growing longer, so it is honoured as the visible God who sustains all life. Sesame (til) and jaggery (gud) — warming winter foods — are eaten, shared and given in charity as a sign of sweetness and good health.
