Onam welcomes the yearly homecoming of the generous King Mahabali, whom Vishnu as Vamana pushed to the netherworld but allowed to visit his people once a year. The pookalam (flower carpet) and the clay Thrikkakkarappan (Vamana as Onathappan) installed in the courtyard on Thiruvonam honour both, followed by the grand Onasadya.
